Effects of strong electronic interactions on the thermopower properties

Thermoelectric materials exhibit induced voltage in the presence of a temperature gradient. Increasing the efficiency of these materials has been an active research topic for many years. A recent route is seeking new classes of compounds that exhibit unconventional properties usually related to strong electron-electron interactions. We discuss how the relation between lattice geometry, interactions, and density can be used to greatly enhance the Seebeck coefficient in models with strongly interacting electrons. We also discuss how strong correlations lead to a change of sign of the Seebeck coefficient with respect to the non-interacting case, which can be classified as a "Seebeck anomaly" arising close to half-filling.
